Rabies is one of the oldest known zoonotic diseases and remains nearly 100% fatal once symptoms appear, yet it is entirely preventable. Despite this, the burden of rabies-related deaths continues to be high, particularly in endemic countries. Every year, on September 28th, World Rabies Day unites people globally to combat this disease. This year’s theme, "Breaking Rabies Boundaries", encourages us to overcome the obstacles that hinder the elimination of rabies, such as gaps in international cooperation, limited access to essential resources, and a lack of public awareness.

On October 1st, the Animal & Plant Health Agency (APHA) joined forces with VIREM – LDAB – Universidad del Valle along with other government agencies, academic institutions, non-profit organisations, and international aid groups to embody this year’s theme with a webinar. The event aims to unite efforts across sectors to break down barriers, raise awareness, dispel misconceptions, and engage communities in the fight against rabies.

Building on the "Breaking Rabies Boundaries" theme, the webinar includes a diverse array of key international players offering a multifaceted approach to the fight against rabies. From canine rabies prevention and control, surveillance in urban and rural areas, and wildlife conservation efforts, the diverse range of speakers, topics, and initiatives reflect the comprehensive effort needed to fight rabies.

We invite you to join us on this important day. This event is open to everyone, and we welcome anyone eager to contribute to this important cause or simply keen to learn more about this disease. We look forward to seeing you there!
