What is the BCT?
The Bite Case Tracker (BCT) is a tool that enables you to track and monitor animal (and snake) bites at a community level in real time. The tool quickly and easily captures a comprehensive set of data for each bite victim and immediately generates outputs that allows you to monitor where bite cases are occurring.
Who is the BCT for?
The BCT was designed for community health workers, clinicians, and outbreak response teams. The BCT tool supplements existing health data reporting systems by collecting vital bite case data within communities.
Why should I use the BCT?
The BCT is a comprehensive bite-case tracking system. This tool is ideal for starting human rabies surveillance in low-resource settings and easily integrates into new or existing community health programs.
What are the benefits of using the BCT?
It will help you to:
- Map the location of each bite at the community-level.
- Identify high-risk areas for rabies based on bite data.
- Gain valuable insight into the causes of bite cases at the community-level.
- Allocate resources (personnel, vaccine, education materials) to at-risk communities.
- Collect data that directly aligns with the WHO indicators required for international reporting.

What data does the BCT capture?
- Investigation date
- Precise GPS coordinates
- Biting species
- Bite victim information: Age, sex
- WHO wound category
- Provocation status of bite
- Vaccination status of biting animal
What are the outputs from the BCT?
- Maps indicating where bite-cases occurred in the community
- Visual analyses of recorded bite case data
Can I use the BCT to replace existing health information systems?
No, the BCT is not a patient management system. It is not intended to replace any existing surveillance or health information systems. The BCT was designed to supplement any existing health data reporting systems by collecting vital bite case data within communities. This will allow you to gather vital information that is often not collected at all.
If you are interested in a patient management system that has been developed specifically for rabies post-exposure treatment, the Rabies Treatment Tracker (RTT) is ideal.
