What rabies elimination work do you do?

Dr. Singh leads the vaccination program at Help in Suffering (HIS), which has run one of the world’s longest-standing and scientifically documented Animal Birth Control and Rabies Control Programs in Jaipur, India since 1994. Through sustained vaccination and sterilization, HIS has achieved a 50% reduction in street dog numbers, and brought down human rabies deaths in the city to zero for nearly two decades. Their work has shaped national policy, trained regional teams, and stands as a global model of One Health in action, protecting human lives, improving dog welfare, and fostering community safety.

  • Population surveys: 2 street dog population surveys conducted using the index of abundance method, continuing the series initiated in 1997. Approximately 1,000 street dogs surveyed in 9.5 hours over 6 days, covering ~33 miles of Jaipur city streets.
  • Survey outcomes: 68.8% of the total dog population vaccinated against rabies, and 69.9% of female dogs sterilised.
  • Rabies testing: 55 dogs showing clinical symptoms suggestive of rabies were tested using the rapid Rabies Antigen Test. 28 tested positive.
