As part of World Rabies Day 2025, Algeria continues to strengthen its collective efforts towards rabies elimination through the implementation of its newly adopted national strategy.
Following the development of this strategy with the support of SARE/GARC, a three-day workshop was organized by the Ministry of Agriculture, with the strong involvement of Dr. Layela Ramdani, for its official approval. The event brought together national and international stakeholders, including:
WOAH (OMSA), WHO,
Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale delle Venezie (Italy),
Ministry of Interior, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Defence,
Pasteur Institute of Algeria,
Algerian Red Crescent,
the Algerian Organization for the Fight Against Rabies,
and many other key actors.
A strong driver of this national effort is the National Observatory of Civil Society (ONSC), under the leadership of its President, Dr. Ibtissem Hamlaoui, which plays a decisive role in supporting and promoting the strategy across the country.
To support the implementation of the strategy, several innovative initiatives will be launched:
National SMS awareness campaign: in partnership with Mobilis, the national telecommunications operator, text messages will be sent to the population to raise awareness on post-bite response and to promote empathy towards animals.
Training of Algerian Red Crescent vaccination agents for animals.
Nationwide distribution of booklets and flyers by the Red Crescent.
Awareness messages broadcasted on national television and radio.
On 28 September 2025, these actions will mark the official national launch of rabies awareness in Algeria.
In parallel, the Algerian Organization Against Rabies is carrying out year-round activities including:
Low-cost sterilization of dogs and cats, with proper identification,
Weekly free rabies vaccination campaigns every Friday at our shelter, always combined with owner awareness sessions (distribution of flyers and children’s educational booklets)
Additionally, a national awareness TV spot on rabies prevention will be launched on 28 September 2025.
