World rabies day 2023

Since 2013, the National Food Agency of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia has been actively participating in the annual celebration of World Rabies Day. This initiative aims to raise public awareness about rabies prevention and promote the vaccination of domestic animals (dogs and cats) against the disease.

Each year, the National Food Agency conducts free rabies vaccination campaigns across all municipalities of the country. Using a door-to-door approach, the Agency’s veterinarians carry out mass vaccination in every village. As a result, the incidence of rabies has decreased by 75% nationwide, clearly demonstrating the effectiveness of the measures implemented.

This year, the Agency once again joins the global initiative. Additional free vaccination campaigns will be organized in all municipalities and regional centers to strengthen further efforts to prevent the disease.

The activities also include:

  • Public awareness campaigns through media and community outreach to educate citizens about rabies risks, symptoms, and prevention measures.

  • Collaboration with international organizations such as FAO, WOAH, and GARC to align national efforts with global standards for rabies control and eradication.

  • Strengthening surveillance and reporting systems for rabies cases in animals to ensure rapid response and containment.

The National Food Agency remains fully committed to protecting public and animal health and contributing to the global goal of eliminating rabies by 2030.
