Campaign Objectives
- Raise awareness of the seriousness of rabies as a preventable, fatal disease.
- Teach prevention methods.
- Encourage people to get vaccinated and receive immediate treatment after being bitten by a dog, cat, or any wild animal, such as a fox or bat.
• What is rabies?
Rabies: A serious viral disease that affects the nervous system and is usually transmitted through a bite or scratch from an infected animal (especially dogs). If not treated immediately, it is fatal in most cases.
• Transmission Methods
- A bite or scratch from an infected dog, stray animal, or other wild animal, such as foxes.
- Saliva from an infected animal gets into an open wound or mucous membranes (eyes, mouth).
• Symptoms in Humans
- Initially: Fever, headache, general weakness.
- Later: Convulsions, fear of water, mental confusion, paralysis, and then death.
• Prevention
- Routine vaccination of domestic dogs.
- Avoid contact with stray dogs or unknown animals.
- In case of a bite:
1. Wash the bite site thoroughly with soap and water for 15 minutes.
2. Immediately go to the nearest health center to receive a rabies vaccination.
3. Do not wait until symptoms appear.
• Community Role
- Cooperate with dog vaccination campaigns.
- Report stray or suspicious dogs.
- Raise awareness of the importance of early treatment, as it saves lives.
