
An awareness class on rabies prevention and control was organized for high school students with the objective of educating young minds about this deadly yet preventable disease at Government Higher Secondary School, Kumbala, Kasaragod, Kerala. India . The session began with an introduction to rabies as a viral infection transmitted mainly through dog bites. Students were given scientific information on how rabies spreads, its symptoms in animals and humans, and the steps to be taken immediately after a bite, especially the importance of washing the wound thoroughly with soap and water and seeking timely vaccination.
The class also highlighted preventive measures such as regular vaccination of pets, avoiding contact with stray or unknown animals, and spreading awareness within the community. Interactive activities, including a short quiz and roleplay demonstration on first aid after dog bites, helped reinforce the key messages.
As part of the program, a rabies awareness video was screened, which visually explained the dangers of rabies and the methods of prevention. The video created a strong impact on the students, making the information more memorable and relatable.
The session concluded with the key message that rabies is 100% preventable if proper precautions and timely medical care are ensured, and students were encouraged to act as ambassadors of awareness in their homes and neighborhoods.
