Learners at Kgadimo Secondary School engaged in a conversation on rabies, pet care and living safely with bats.

The "One Health, pet care and living safely with bats" day was held at the rural community of Ga Mampa in Mafefe, Limpopo Province, South Africa. The event aimed to create awareness and educate school learners and community members on rabies, pet care and living safely with bats and other wildlife using the One Health approach. The day was organized by the University of Pretoria Centre for Viral Zoonoses and Future Africa Research Chair on People, Health and Places (One Health), both led by Professor Wanda Markotter. Activities of the day included interactive conversations on pet care, interacting safely with bats and other wildlife, diseases associated with animals (zoonoses), the importance of rabies vaccination, and when to avoid interactions with dogs, bats, or other wildlife.

The day was also marked by a career day to expose learners to study and career opportunities after high school as well as motivate them to stay in school. In addition, a laboratory was also built for the school to enable learners in STEM to do experiments and practical components in their curriculum.
