World Rabies Day: Protecting Lives in Tarakea Through Dog Vaccination
In Tarakea village in northern Tanzania, Daud Kanyenye, Animal Health Scientist and Director of OneHealth at Tanzania Health Awake Youth Led Organization, went door to door visiting households to provide dog vaccinations. He ensured each dog was vaccinated safely and explained to owners how rabies is a deadly but preventable disease.
While moving from home to home, he educated children and adults on responsible pet care and the importance of vaccination in preventing human infections.
This door-to-door vaccination effort goes beyond animal health — it is a life-saving intervention. Each vaccinated dog reduces the risk of rabies in the community and brings Tarakea closer to the global Zero by 30 goal to eliminate dog-mediated human rabies deaths.
On World Rabies Day, Daud’s initiative highlights how community-level action can save lives, one dog at a time.
