In response to “World Rabies Day” on September 28, the Yilan County Government held the “Yilan World Rabies Day and Yilan Happy Pet Carnival Event” at the Luodong Cultural Workshop on September 14, 2025. Through a fun and educational approach, the event aimed to raise public awareness of rabies prevention and call on everyone to work together to safeguard the health of both animals and humans.
At the event, the Yilan County Animal and Plant Disease Control Office (APDCC)set up a special booth offering 100 free rabies vaccinations and 100 free microchip implantations for pets, while also assisting owners with on-site pet registration. Staff promoted key concepts such as pet neutering, disease prevention, and responsible ownership, hoping to strengthen public awareness of animal protection and public health through life education and disease prevention messages.
Rabies is a viral zoonotic disease with a fatality rate of nearly 100%, mainly transmitted through bites and scratches of dogs, cats or wild animals. There have been no more cases of dog infection in Taiwan since 1961, but since 2013, infections of wild animals such as weasel badgers have been detected, and there have been case of infection after dogs were bitten by weasel badgers, indicating that the risk of the epidemic still exists, and the epidemic prevention work cannot be relaxed at all.
