Since the launch of the United Against Rabies Forum, the COVID-19 pandemic has forced a major review of global health policy. One Health – an approach based on the intimate links between human, animal and environmental health, has become a policy priority in designing zoonotic disease interventions strategies and ensuring future pandemic preparedness.
The challenge is to turn the One Health concept into practical action, especially in low income settings where neglected tropical diseases are a socio-economic burden. Rabies – an ancient zoonotic disease for which there are effective vaccines and proven control strategies - is increasingly recognised as a disease that can put One Health into practice, delivering concrete results for affected communities, as well as building the integrated systems that will protect us against future zoonotic shocks.
